Ann Coulter: The Outrage Engine Jumps The Tracks

May 12, 2014

As many have likely heard, there has been a kerfuffle over Ann Coulter tweeting a selfie holding a handwritten sign with the hashtag #BringBackOurCountry, apparently playing on the #BringBackOurGirls hashtag related to the Boko Haram abduction of Nigerian schoolgirls.

The tweeted picture can be seen here:

Keep in mind, she never actually tweeted the hashtag, only a picture of her holding the handwritten sign. She also didn’t direct the tweet to anyone, so it would presumably only be seen by her followers, or those that willingly peruse her timeline. But whatever else Ann Coulter may be, she is no fool. She is a tireless self promoter and knows how to play for free publicity. You might even say she is ‘possessed’ of marketing genius.

For clarification, let me state that I don’t recall a time when I’ve ever agreed with Ann Coulter, and I consider myself conservative in many ways. What she represents is not any conservative or libertarian vision I embrace. And I’m not convinced she embraces it either. But she understands VERY well how to spin her profile for financial advantage… She is outrageous because it pays.

Back on twitter, the predictable reaction from the perpetual outrage machine is to spread the picture around and whine that Coulter somehow ‘hijacked’ the #BringBackOurGirls hashtag… whatever that means. I’m quite sure there are no injuries or negotiators required with hashtag hijacking. All this does is give her a ton of free publicity… as she no doubt knew would happen.

This is EXACTLY the same response the SJW crowd count on when spinning a new round of rage for their rabid followers and haters. The story gets blown out of proportion, people pick sides and argue loudly and menacingly, and drive ad revenue from blogs and whatever useless trinkets they happen to be peddling. So by spreading your faux outrage (and it is almost always fake, next to no one actually DOES anything with hashtag activism) you actually enrich the target of your ire and ensure they will repeat the process.

Don’t like Ann Coulter? Don’t appreciate Rebecca Watson? PZ Meyers piss you off? Then IGNORE them. There is nothing in it for them unless you engage them or propagate the faux outrage. And let’s be honest here… Regardless of how repugnant you may consider their views, their freedom of speech is tightly wound with your own. If you were to succeed in silencing them instead of just ignoring them, who is to say YOU wouldn’t be next? That’s the thing about rights: If you won’t stand for those of others, even those you disagree with, your own will go down the drain with theirs.
