In The Beginning (Originally posted on Facebook, June 1, 2013)

Lets settle this: Archaeology, art, literature all document that man came first and then invented gods to explain the chaos that their evolving intellect did not yet understand. The steady progression of science has displaced gods as rational explanations replaced superstition. We are now at the point of understanding the origins of life and the universe that spawned it. In the near future we may be able to synthesize life and model the big bang. Evolution is a fact. It is provable. Ra, Zeus, Quetzalcoatl, Odin, etc… are all dead and gone. Those ancient gods evolved into the gods we have now. But we now KNOW better. There is no reason to hold on to the ‘creator myth’, and certainly not as a basis for a system of ethics and morals. It’s… not… true.

If you were born in Cambodia you would likely be Buddhist. If you were born in Western Europe you would likely be Christian… in Israel, Jewish… Saudi Arabia, Muslim… India, Hindu… and most of these religions claim to be the truth to the exclusion of the others. In fact the followers of all religions are atheistic to all others. (Atheism simply excludes one extra god). So whatever religion you believe in, or even if you don’t, you are damned to one hell or another. Does this speak to a universal, perfect truth? Of course not… It’s… not… true.

So what you are left with is faith. What is faith? It is holding onto an outdated and demonstrably false story in the hope of a place in the afterlife. And sorry to disappoint you, but it is totally irrational to the point of insanity to think this will happen. It’s… not… true.

And I won’t apologize for offending anyone. If you still believe in Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy against all evidence as an adult, then you would be looked upon as a fool. Well replace that nonexistent and unprovable entity with another one… lets call him god or allah or yaweh… and make him the ruler of the universe. The evidence is no better just because the name is different. It’s…. not…. true.

Look, the more extraordinary the claim, the more extraordinary the evidence required to support it. Yet we aren’t talking about evidence that is debatable or weak… There is NONE. It’s…. not…. true.

So can everyone stop thanking god for the meal they bought at the supermarket… and touchdowns… and for sparing your house when the tornado he sent destroyed the rest of the town and killed all your neighbors. And for the love of god… I mean for christ’s sake… I mean in the name of all that is good and holy… OK, just stop killing each other over what fictional psychopath is your favorite.  Please!
